Bangalore offers five practical commute modes for daily office travel: cab, auto-rickshaw, metro, BMTC bus, and own vehicle (bike or car). Each has a very different cost structure, comfort level, and time predictability. This guide breaks down actual monthly costs using official 2025–26 Karnataka RTA rates and metro fares.
Cost Comparison at a Glance
| Mode | Base Fare | Per km Rate | Monthly (10 km/day) | Monthly (20 km/day) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🚗 Cab (Ola/Uber) | ₹100 / 4 km | ₹24/km | ₹10,736 | ₹21,296 |
| 🛺 Auto-rickshaw | ₹36 / 2 km | ₹18/km | ₹7,920 | ₹15,840 |
| 🚇 Namma Metro | ₹10 | ₹2.50/km | ₹935 | ₹935 |
| 🚌 BMTC Bus | ₹5 | ₹0.90/km | ₹1,200 | ₹1,200 |
| 🏍 Own vehicle | — | ₹6.50/km | ₹1,320 | ₹2,640 |
Monthly cost = 2 trips × 22 working days. Metro shown as monthly pass. Own vehicle includes petrol + depreciation estimate.
Cab (Ola / Uber / Rapido)
Rate (current Karnataka): ₹100 flat for first 4 km, then ₹24/km.
Cab is the most convenient but most expensive option. For a 15 km one-way commute, a single trip costs roughly ₹364 — or ₹16,000/month for daily two-way travel. Surge pricing during peak hours can push this up by 20–40%. Suitable if your company provides cab allowance or if you share with colleagues.
Auto-Rickshaw
Rate (Karnataka Aug 2025 revision): ₹36 flat for first 2 km, then ₹18/km.
Auto is cheaper than cab for short distances (under 8 km) but becomes comparable to cab for longer commutes. Peak-hour autos in Bangalore often refuse meter fares and demand negotiated rates — budget 20–30% above meter for reality. Best for last-mile connectivity from a metro station.
Namma Metro
Rate: ₹10 minimum, ₹2.50/km. Monthly pass: ₹935.
If both your home and office are metro-accessible, this is by far the cheapest and most time-predictable option. The ₹935 monthly pass is a fixed cost regardless of distance or number of trips — it pays for itself after roughly 8–10 working days of two-way travel. Metro avoids peak-hour road congestion entirely, making commute times far more reliable than any road-based option.
Limitation: coverage is still building out. The Purple Line (East–West) and Green Line (North–South) cover many IT corridors but not all.
BMTC Bus
Rate: ₹5 minimum, ₹0.90/km. Monthly pass: ₹1,200.
The cheapest option on paper, but BMTC buses are slow during peak hours and routes may not go directly to your office. Realistically suitable for commuters who are comfortable with 60–90 min travel times and live near a major bus route. The ₹1,200 monthly pass is often worth it if you're using bus daily.
Own Vehicle (Bike / Car)
Estimated cost: ₹6.50/km (petrol at current prices + bike depreciation).
Own vehicle gives flexibility and is mid-range in cost. For a 10 km one-way commute, monthly fuel + depreciation is roughly ₹2,860. Car ownership adds parking costs (₹1,500–₹3,000/month in IT parks), making bikes more economical. Peak-hour congestion means the time advantage vs cab is minimal in the East and South corridors.
Which Mode Should You Choose?
- Metro accessible + short walk from office: Metro monthly pass — cheapest, most reliable.
- 10–15 km commute, no metro: Own bike — best cost-time balance.
- 15+ km commute: Carpool with colleagues or company cab — splits costs significantly.
- Under 5 km: Auto or cycle — avoid cab for short distances, it's disproportionately expensive.
- Irregular schedule / late nights: Cab — only option with 24/7 availability and surge pricing is manageable for occasional use.
